Sikkim Transport Dept to Support Underprivileged Taxi Drivers’ Children

So far, 9 students have benefited under the Sikkim Sarathi Samman scheme. Some of the students are pursuing MBBS and PhD degrees

The Prem Singh Tamang-led Sikkim government plans to continue helping children of underprivileged taxi drivers pursue their studies under the Sikkim Sarathi Samman scheme with money from the Chief Minister’s Discretionary Fund, Madan Cintury, Advisor, Sikkim Transport Department, said.

So far, nine students have benefit from this initiative, with some pursuing MBBS and PhD degrees.

In addition, the Transport Department has chosen two disciplined taxi drivers from each of Sikkim’s six districts, totalling 12 drivers, who will each be awarded a WagonR car. CM Tamang will also felicitate the most sincere, disciplined, and elderly taxi drivers at the Sikkim Sarathi Samman Samhelan to be held on August 2.

“On 2nd August more underprivileged children will be selected and offered support from the state government,” Cintury said.

Moreover, the Chief Minister is expected to announce several beneficial schemes aimed at the welfare of taxi drivers, further underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting the community, Cintury said.
