Tamang said that the SDF party do not consider “mothers and daughters of the state” worthy of representation in the assembly.

The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha tore into the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front on Sunday for not fielding a single women candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

While campaigning in Rorathang for the Rhenock constituency seat, SKM President and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang slammed the SDF for not fielding a single female candidate.

Tamang said that the SDF party do not consider “mothers and daughters of the state” worthy of representation in the assembly.

He questioned what message the SDF is sending out to the women by not nominating even one for the assembly polls and the Lok Sabha elections.

Tamang said his party SKM has nominated four women for the state assembly polls and also accommodated other sections of society in the candidates’ list.

The women SKM candidates include Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang’s wife Krishna Kumar Rai. She is in the fray from Namchi-Singhithang, while the sitting MLA Rajkumari Thapa, who joined the ruling party from BJP recently has been fielded from Rangang.

The SKM has fielded Kala Rai from Upper Burtuk against BJP president and sitting MLA D R Thapa, while Pamin Lepcha is contesting from Gnathang-Machong (BL) constituency.

“Bharati Sharma, the first female leader of the political party, was elected from my hometown of Soreng-Chakung constituency in 2014”, Tamang added.

Notably, SDF had nominated Sangita Bhandari in the Rhenock assembly constituency but replaced her with ex-minister Somnath Poudyal after Tamang filed a nomination from the Rhenock seat.
