The ECI was apprised that under the prevailing conditions in Sikkim the ensuing Parliamentary and State Assembly Election 2024 cannot be conducted freely and fairly in Sikkim.
Chief Spokesperson of Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Party, MK Subba submitted a representation to the Election Commission of India at New Delhi on behalf of party president Pawan Chamling, regarding the upcoming Parliamentary and State Elections scheduled for April-May 2024.
The SDF Party in a comprehensive representation highlighted various concerns related to governance in Sikkim, especially focusing on the deteriorating law and order situation since the formation of the incumbent SKM government in 2019.
“This has created an atmosphere of insecurity and widespread fear among the general public”, the party said.
The ECI was apprised that under the prevailing conditions in Sikkim the ensuing Parliamentary and State Assembly Election 2024 cannot be conducted freely and fairly in Sikkim.
“It is also observed that there has been unusual increase of voters in the latest voters list of Sikkim which is far above the recorded annual increase. For instance, in the case of 25-Upper Tadong Assembly constituency which recorded an increase of over 8% against State average of 3.8%”, the party added.
The SDF Party has demanded an increase of polling booths as the voting per percentage is very high in Sikkim and also there is simultaneous elections for Parliamentary and State Assembly Election.
Furthermore, since Sikkim being a sensitive border State and to ensure free and fair election, the party also requested ECI to dispatch the central paramilitary forces to ensure peace and enable voters to exercise their rights without intimidation or influence.
The ECI has assured that the issues raised by the Party will be seriously taken into consideration.
