The Yatra is being organised to promote unity among the people of the state and help build a better Sikkim

The Sikkim Democratic Front Party (SDF) welcomed the move of footballer-turned-politician Baichung Bhutia led Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) to launch a 1000-kilometer-long ‘Sikkimey Ekta Yatra’, through the entire state from April 6, 2023.

The Yatra is being organised to promote unity among the people of the state and help build a better Sikkim.

According to SDF, Sikkim is a relevant place at this time for the ideas and goals pursued by the Yatra. Due to the policies and programs  of violence that have been unleashed on the peaceful people of Sikkim, the state of Sikkim is rife with unrest.

“The undemocratic means used to police this State has caused for many casualties that are in the form of violent acts instigated by open threats of the SKM leaders. This has to be stopped by the people. Democracy is the reason Sikkim became a part of the Indian Union in 1975 through a referendum. We see a complete loss of that in the present political situation as obtained in Sikkim by acts of omission and commission.
Hence, Sikkim needs a healing touch and hence we fully understand the scope of this Yatra through collective political activism. Without peace and security there can never be progress, development and social justice for all,” read a statement of SDF.

The party further said, “In our own way we are also highlighting the same set of issues in our Sikkim Bachao Abhiyan undertaken by our Party President and the cadres of the SDF Party.”

The Yatra will start in North Sikkim and then pass through the Western, Southern, and Eastern parts of the state.

It aims to help connect with people from different parts of the state and create a platform for the people to voice their concerns and aspirations.

Baichung Bhutia on March 7 announcing about the Yatra urged people to come together to build a better Sikkim that is free from corruption and evils.
