As the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang completed 100 days of its second term in office on September 18, the opposition Citizen Action Party (CAP) has raised serious concerns about its performance.
In a press conference held in Gangtok, CAP spokesperson Mahesh Rai said the SKM government has not met the expectations of the public and accused them of failing to deliver on pre-election promises. “The government has been unable to pay salaries to its employees,” Rai stated, questioning the government’s financial management. He also criticized the recent hike in taxes, including those on forest resources and vehicles, labeling the SKM’s 100 days as “failed governance.”
Adding to the criticism, CAP spokesperson Phuri Sherpa responded to a remark by Chief Minister Tamang, who downplayed CAP’s significance due to its mere 5% vote share in the 2024 elections. Sherpa countered, “CAP is a registered political party, and the CM should not underestimate us.” She pointed to how the SKM itself was once underestimated by the former Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) government but eventually secured a landslide victory.
CAP questioned the SKM’s ability to fulfill its promises, and warned that the public is growing increasingly disillusioned with the government’s tardy progress so far.
