Sikkim Ecclesiastical and Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister, Sonam Lama on Wednesday met Union Minister of Communications and Minister of Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia and discussed key developmental priorities for the state of Sikkim.
The meeting focused on enhancing communication infrastructure, improving connectivity, and advancing ongoing and future development projects in Sikkim.
Both leaders emphasized collaborative efforts to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth in the state.
Significantly, the frontier state of Sikkim faces communication connectivity issues, particularly in remote and disaster-prone areas, due to its challenging geography and infrastructure limitations. These challenges include disruptions caused by natural disasters like landslides and heavy rainfall, which can damage roads and communication infrastructure, leading to communication blackouts. Efforts are underway to improve digital inclusion and connectivity, including initiatives to establish internet access in rural areas and enhance the capacity of government employees in digital technologies.
These efforts indicate a growing recognition of the importance of communication connectivity for Sikkim’s development and a commitment to addressing the existing challenges through strategic initiatives and collaborations.
