The Chief Secretary assured that all necessary measures would be sanctioned swiftly to ensure timely relief and rehabilitation support.
In a significant step towards post-disaster management, a crucial meeting was held today at the Office of the Chief Secretary, Tashiling Secretariat, to address urgent relief and protection measures for Lachen, which was recently devastated by a flash flood on May 29.
Key focus areas included the construction of temporary foot suspension bridges, restoration of disrupted power lines and mobile networks, steady supply of essential goods, and assessment of flood-affected zones.
The Chief Secretary assured that all necessary measures would be sanctioned swiftly to ensure timely relief and rehabilitation support for the people of Lachen.
Chaired by Samdup Lepcha, Minister and MLA of the Lachen-Mangan constituency, the meeting brought together top officials and members of the Lachen Dzumsa, who represented public concerns and placed local demands before the state authorities.
Earlier, the Sikkim government had officially declared the damage caused by incessant rainfall in Mangan district since May 28 as a “disaster” under Section 22(2)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
The region faced further tragedy when three Indian Army personnel lost their lives and six others went missing after a landslide struck an army camp at Chaten in Lachen. The situation worsened following a cloudburst and relentless rain on the night of May 30–31, which caused the Teesta River to surge by 35–40 feet, destroying vital roads and bridges, and cutting off regional connectivity.
The meeting marked a decisive move toward coordinated recovery efforts in the region.
