Sikkim: Former Cong leader Bharat Basnet joins CAP

Ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Sikkim, former president of Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee, Bharat Basnet today joined newly floated Citizen Action Party (CAP).

He joined CAP in presence of party president LP Khafley ,Chief Coordinator Ganesh Rai, other CAP leaders and party supporters at a programme held in Pakyong.

Speaking at the event, Basnet said that the current Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government in Sikkim is corrupt and anti-Sikkimiese. He called on the public to support CAP in the 2024 assembly elections in order to remove the SKM government from power.

Hailing from Ranipol, Gangtok, Basnet joined politics between 1985-86.

In 2009 assembly election, he contested from Arithang constituency on Congress ticket, however he lost.

He had also contested in Lok Sabha elections 2019, but was unsuccessful, and he resigned from Congress later in 2020.

He was also the former president of Sikkimey Nagarik Samaj (SNS),a non-political pressure group.
