The discussions covered conservation challenges, opportunities, and successful strategies for protecting high-altitude tigers.

A team from Sikkim’s Forest and Environment Department, led by Dr. Pradeep Kumar, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Secretary, joined a two-day transboundary meeting in Thimphu, Bhutan, focused on High Altitude Tiger conservation across India, Bhutan, and Nepal.

The delegation included senior officials from Bhutan’s Department of Forest & Park Services, Nepal’s National Trust for Nature Conservation, and Dr. Rajesh Gopal, Secretary General of the Global Tiger Forum (GTF).

This collaboration comes as recent camera trap images confirmed tiger movements between Sikkim and Bhutan, underscoring the need for cross-border conservation efforts. The discussions covered conservation challenges, opportunities, and successful strategies for protecting high-altitude tigers across the Himalayan region.

Dr. Rajesh Gopal emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among Himalayan states, noting that tiger territories often stretch across borders, impacting conservation goals for India, Bhutan, and Nepal.

The Sikkim delegation shared key initiatives by the Sikkim government, including the “Mero Rukh Mero Santati” (My Tree, My Offspring) program, and Sikkim’s identity as the “Green State of India.” The delegation also visited Bhutan’s Jigme Khesar Strict Nature Reserve in Haa to observe local conservation methods and success stories in field management.
