Earlier, an 8-year-old boy died and six others, including two kids, were injured when a mortar shell they collected from the Teesta bank exploded
Post the catastrophic floods that has plagued Sikkim for the past ten days, bombs and ammunitions which were swept away from the Army ammunition depot in North Sikkim during the flash floods, have been found on the banks of the Teesta river.
The explosives have been found not just in North Sikkim but downstream in Jalpaiguri in West Bengal.
This has been a cause of concern for the Army, police as well as the government.
Earlier the Sikkim government had issued a statement saying, “The flooding has destroyed the Army ammunition depot at Munshithang (above Chungthang), due to which the Teesta Basin is filled with weapons, ammunition and explosives, which endanger the public by making it difficult to clear debris and sludge, particularly adjacent to the riverbank dwellings.”
The Army and the police had issued advisories warning the public about the explosives floating in the river. People have been asked not to touch or pick any of the explosives as it might explode and have asked the public to immediately inform police or the authorities if they spot anything.
However, an 8-year-old boy died and six others, including two kids, were injured when a mortar shell they collected from the Teesta bank exploded at Maynaguri in North Bengal.
There have been explosions in the river bank because of the washed away ammunitions.
The devastating floods caused by a glacial lake burst at South Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim left at least 57 dead and ravaged several parts of the state including Chunthang, Lachen, Lachung, Mangan and Pakyong.
