Sikkim CM Pushes for ST Status for 12 Left-Out Communities at SSHLC Meeting in Delhi

The Chief Minister acknowledged the tireless efforts of the SSHLC, and community representatives to support the demand for inclusion.

In a significant step towards securing Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the 12 left-out communities of Sikkim, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang reiterated his unwavering commitment at the 2nd Meeting of the Sikkim State High-Level Committee (SSHLC) held at Sikkim House, New Delhi on Monday.

Addressing the gathering, CM Tamang emphasized that the inclusion of these communities in the ST list is not just a constitutional right but is also essential for preserving their cultural identity, heritage, and traditional practices.

“The aspirations of these communities have always held a special place in my heart. Their recognition is a matter of constitutional right and is also essential for preserving their unique cultural identity, heritage, and traditional practices. We also had the opportunity to be enlightened with a deeper understanding of the various statuses, struggles, and grievances presented by the representatives of each community, present,” he said.

The Chief Minister acknowledged the tireless efforts of the SSHLC, community representatives, and experts in compiling a comprehensive and well-substantiated document to support the demand for inclusion.

“I deeply appreciate the unwavering efforts of the SSHLC, community representatives, and experts who are meticulously working to prepare a comprehensive and well-substantiated document for their inclusion,” said CM Tamang.

He urged all stakeholders to maintain momentum and rigorously address the critical queries raised by the Government of India to ensure a strong case for recognition.

Together, with dedication and perseverance, we can overcome challenges and fulfill this long-standing aspiration,” he added.

Reaffirming his personal commitment to the cause, CM Tamang assured that the Sikkim Government will extend full support at every stage of the process.

He called upon all stakeholders to work collectively toward achieving this historic milestone, which will positively transform the lives of the 12 left-out communities and strengthen the social fabric of Sikkim.

Expressing his appreciation, CM Tamang thanked his Cabinet colleagues, Members of Parliament (Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha), MLAs, and Advisors for their unwavering support.

He also extended special gratitude to SSHLC Chairman Prof. B.V. Sharma and Vice Chairman Prof. Mahendra P. Lama for their guidance and expertise.

With the state leadership, experts, and community representatives united in their efforts, the push for ST status for the 12 left-out communities has gained significant momentum.
