Sikkim CM confident of his party SKM winning all 32 Assembly seats in upcoming polls

"Every opposition leader is weaker than me, so why criticise them,” CM Tamang said when asked about Bhaichung Bhutia critiquing SKM
With the opposition parties teaming up to fight the 2024 Sikkim Assembly elections together, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party president and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Friday exuded confidence that his party will win all 32 assembly seats and return to power in the upcoming Assembly elections.
The SKM Chief said this during his address at the mass joining program held today in Ravangla under Barfung Constituency in South Sikkim.
Reacting to Bhaichung Bhutia’s criticism of the SKM government, CM Tamang said, “Every opposition leader is weaker than me, so why criticise them when it is certain that we will win all 32 Assembly seats in Sikkim without even criticizing the opposition? When the previous government had all the power, despite that, we won the majority of the votes in 17 constituencies in 2019. Now, we have the government and the machinery, so we are certain to win all 32 seats.”
Downplaying Bhaichung Bhutia joining the SDF party, the CM said, “It doesn’t matter who joins where or where they may have contested before, they were opposition in 2019, and they will be opposition in 2024. He (Bhaichung Bhutia) is looking at Barfung, but he is a failed politician in two states. He has joined hands with someone who has criticized him the most, and he has declared him the most corrupt. He was not with us in 2019,” Tamang added.
Earlier, Bhaichung Bhutia had pointed at rising incidents of violence and corruption during the SKM government’s tenure.
He raised several key issues, including the complete dilution of Article 371F. He also pointed out the erosion of Sikkimese identity under the SKM government. Bhaichung highlighted the absence of a debate in the Assembly regarding the implementation of the “one nation, one card” policy and noted the lack of communication regarding the ongoing Uniform Civil Code (UCC) discussions.
Bhaichung Bhutia drew attention to the significant increase in loans taken by the government in the past four years, contrasting it with the comparatively lower loan amounts taken by the SDF over the last 25 years.
He raised questions about the sources of funding for SKM’s campaigns and called on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate alleged financial irregularities.
He criticized the current state of Sikkim’s image, describing it as a shift from a peaceful and green state to a more violent one. Bhaichung characterized the current government as focused on entertainment rather than effective governance.
