Clashes erupted between members of Citizen Action Party (CAP) and police when the CAP members were going to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by offering Khada (Scarf) on his statue today evening in Gangtok but were allegedly stopped from doing so by the police.
The clashes broke out when a team of CAP members under the leadership of party President LP Khafley and Chief Coordinator Ganesh Rai went to MG Marg in Gangtok to pay tribute to the Mahatma after unveiling the party symbol at a special event in Rangpo.
The CAP members apparently broke the police barricade and went ahead to pay tribute to the Mahatma.
Speaking to Northeast Live Chief Coordinator Ganesh Rai said that the incident is unfortunate and stated that there is no democracy left in Sikkim . He further said that after receiving the election symbol there has been a rush of excitement among party workers.
CAP is a new political party that was formed in January this year and is led by President Laxmi Prasad Kafley.
CAP today announced that they will be contesting all the 32 Assembly seats in the upcoming state elections without entering into any alliance with any other party.
