Sikkim: 126 Tourist Vehicles Leave Landslide-Hit Lachen Safely

First Published: 27th April, 2025 14:26 IST

This marks the complete evacuation of all tourists who were stuck in Lachen.

In a major relief, all tourists stranded in Lachen due to heavy landslides triggered by continuous rainfall have been safely evacuated, officials confirmed. According to the latest update from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Chungthang, 126 tourist vehicles left Lachen on the morning of April 27, heading towards Lachung via Dongkha La.

Most of the vehicles have already crossed Chungthang and are now moving towards their destinations through Sangkalang. This marks the complete evacuation of all tourists who were stuck in Lachen.

Earlier, around 600 tourists and 100 vehicles had been stranded in Lachen, while Lachung was hosting approximately 800 tourists and 150 vehicles. Heavy landslides since April 25 had damaged major roads, cutting off access to these popular tourist spots. Mobile networks were down in the area, making communication extremely difficult.

The region witnessed multiple landslides, especially at Munshithang on the Lachen-Chungthang road and at Lema/Bob on the Lachung-Chungthang road, blocking major routes and isolating Lachen and Lachung.

The evacuation, which started on April 25 from Chungthang, has successfully ensured the safe movement of stranded tourists.

The District Administration has extended heartfelt thanks to all departments, associations, and volunteers whose tireless efforts made the evacuation possible. Officials assured that they will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide all necessary support to travelers.
