Sikkim Accident: The vehicle was carrying 11 individuals, 10 tourists, and a driver when it skidded off the hilly road yesterday.

One tourist died, 2 were critically injured and 8 are missing, after the tourist vehicle they were travelling in reportedly plunged nearly 1,000 feet into the Teesta River late Thursday evening between Chungthang and Munshithang in North Sikkim.

The vehicle was carrying 11 individuals, 10 tourists, and a driver when it skidded off the hilly road at around 8 PM yesterday.

According to the Superintendent of Police, Mangan District, Sonam Dechu Bhutia, one body has been recovered, and two survivors were rescued and rushed to Chungthang. The injured were later shifted to Mangan District Hospital in critical condition.

Rescue operations have been intensified, with the Army, ITBP, Sikkim Police, district officials, and local volunteers working overnight amid harsh terrain and adverse weather. As the Teesta River is swollen due to heavy rains, it is further complicating the search.

The victims, believed to be tourists from West Bengal and other parts of India, have not yet been officially identified, as authorities continue to notify families.

Efforts remain underway to locate the eight still missing. As rescue efforts continue further details are awaited.
