In a shocking incident, a human skull was found floating in Kalyansagar, the sacred waterbody of Tripurasundari Temple located in Udaipur, Tripura on Wednesday.
Tripurasundari Temple, a prominent Hindu shrine among the country’s 51 temples, was constructed by Maharaj Dhanya Manikya Bahadur in 1501 during the reign of the Manikya dynasty when Udaipur, then known as Rangamati, served as the kingdom’s capital.
According to an official from Radhakishorepur police station, local residents spotted the floating skull early this morning and immediately notified the authorities. Subsequently, a team of police officers promptly arrived at the scene and retrieved the skull.
“The situation has been assessed, and it has been determined that the skull is indeed that of a human. It seems likely that someone had taken the skull from elsewhere and dumped it in the temple’s waterbody,” stated the official.
Meanwhile, locals, businessmen, and devotees have been speculating whether any visiting tantrik might have accidentally left the skull behind while offering prayers at the temple.
Expressing his concerns, Matabari MLA Abhishek Debroy suggested the construction of a concrete wall to enclose the Kalyansagar waterbody, leaving specific bathing steps or ‘ghats’ for devotees to partake in the holy rituals.
Debroy also revealed that he has proposed a plan to the local administration for the installation of CCTV cameras in and around Kalyansagar, aiming to prevent any future incidents of this nature.
The head priest of Tripurasundari Temple, Chandan Chakraborty, admitted to not being fully aware of whether the retrieved item was indeed a human skull. Nevertheless, he assured that he would perform ‘jal shodhan kriyakarma,’ or purification rituals, to cleanse the waterbody.
Located 55 km south of Agartala, Tripurasundari Temple is revered as one of the most sacred Hindu shrines in the country.
