Congress leader Ajoy Kumar has landed in a massive controversy after he allegedly referred to Sikkim as a neighboring country. In a press conference on Monday, the Congress leader and former Member of Parliament, while criticizing the Central Government’s foreign policies, referred to Sikkim as a “neighboring country.”

The Congress leader while listing India’s neighbors, named Sikkim alongside countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan inadvertently suggesting that Sikkim lies outside India’s territorial fold.

Following this condemnation has started to pound the Congress leader. The BJP Sikkim unit condemned and vehemently denounced the statement made by the Congress leader.

Sikkim BJP leader, Niren Bhandari stated that it is utterly deplorable that a former IPS officer and Member of Parliament displayed such appalling disregard for India’s history and geography.

Bhandari asking for an apology from Ajoy Kumar added that the Congress party must immediately educate its leaders to prevent such disgraceful blunders. Bhandari said that Sikkim merged with India when Indira Gnadhi was the Prime Minister and such controversial statements from a Congress leader like Ajoy Kumar who also was Congress in charge of Sikkim is very unfortunate.

The Citizens Action Party (CAP) spokesperson, Albert Gurung said that the statement made by Ajoy Kumar has given a shock to the people of Sikkim. Gurung said that Sikkim celebrated its 50th Statehood day this year after it merged with India and it was during Congress rule at the Centre when Sikkim merged with India. Gurung affirmed that the sense patriotism exhibited by people of Sikkim is incomparable and such statements from National leaders, tagging them as outsiders is very unfortunate
Reacting to the outrage in Sikkim, Congress Spokesperson Ajoy Kumar has issued an apology.

“Yesterday, during my press conference, while I was speaking about the deteriorating relations with our neighbouring countries, I mistakenly mentioned the name of a state. I sincerely apologise for this, as it was an unintentional human error — a slip of the tongue,” Congress leader Ajoy Kumar said, clarifying his mistake.

But the question remains, will the controversy end with the apology from Ajoy Kumar or is it going to snowball into a major political issue? Will the people of Sikkim let go of such a blunder so easily?
