Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced that the area will be turned into a Hawker-Free Zone, restricting it solely to pedestrian use.

Khyndailad or Police Bazar, a bustling commercial hub in Shillong known for its second-hand clothes market, is set for a significant transformation.

The Meghalaya government is preparing to designate vending zones within three areas of Khyndailad, also known as Police Bazar, as part of the first phase of relocating hawkers and vendors in the state capital.

The government’s plan aims to make the area a Hawker-Free Zone, dedicated exclusively to pedestrians. Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced that the relocation process, expected to be completed by mid-November, involves relocating vendors, issuing permits, and fully pedestrianizing the area.

Lyngdoh also noted that the purpose of this move is to create a more organized and accessible space.

Specific spots have been identified within Khyndailad Junction and other commercial areas like Laitumkhrah, which will be covered in the second phase.

This initiative aims to enhance the city’s infrastructure and improve the shopping experience for both residents and tourists.
