Shillong Medical College on Track for 2025 Completion: Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh

Health Minister shared the government’s commitment to addressing Meghalaya’s longstanding shortage of doctors.
Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has confirmed that the much-awaited Shillong Medical College is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed by 2025. Briefing the media after the recent Cabinet meeting in Sohra, the minister shared the government’s commitment to addressing Meghalaya’s longstanding shortage of doctors.
“The people of Meghalaya can look forward to 2025 as the year when this critical gap in healthcare will be bridged,” Lyngdoh stated. She also revealed that the Government of India has encouraged the state to launch postgraduate courses at the college by 2027, terming it “a win-win situation.”
The Cabinet meet discussed issues and initiatives to be taken in the health sector at length.
While the Shillong Medical College remains on schedule, the Tura Medical College has faced delays due to funding and approval issues from the central government. Lyngdoh assured that efforts are underway to limit the delay to not more than 12 months. “Proposals have been sent to the Government of India, and we are awaiting necessary approvals,” she said.
Addressing broader concerns, Lyngdoh pointed out that delayed funding often hampers the operations of primary health centres (PHCs), community health centres (CHCs), and sub-centres. She noted that half of the health budget is allocated to salaries, while the remaining funds frequently fail to reach these facilities on time.
To resolve these issues, the government plans to conduct audits of healthcare facilities to identify inefficiencies and ensure optimal resource utilisation. Lyngdoh emphasised the importance of enhancing the functionality of existing centres over mere upgrades. “Upgradation alone is not the solution. We aim to ensure that PHCs, sub-centres, and CHCs are operating effectively,” she asserted.
The Cabinet Retreat marked a milestone as Meghalaya’s first comprehensive field visit by the entire Cabinet. “This initiative, likely the first of its kind in the country, allowed us to dedicate two full days to address critical issues,” Lyngdoh further added.
