SDF’s Prem Bahadur Bhandari Files Nomination for Soreng-Chakung Bye-Election

The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on October 28, and candidates have until October 30 to withdraw their nominations.

On the sixth day of the nomination process for the upcoming 2024 Bye-Elections, Prem Bahadur Bhandari, the candidate representing the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), officially filed his nomination today for the 07-Soreng Chakung Assembly Constituency.

Daniel Rai has filed his nomination for the Namchi-Shinghithang Assembly seat. Prem Bahadur Bhandari and Daniel Rai are contesting election for the first time.

On October 21, 2024, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) candidates Aditya Golay and Satish Chandra Rai submitted their nominations for the Soreng-Chakung and Namchi-Shinghithang constituencies, respectively.

Aditya Golay, 34, son of SKM Supremo and Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, will be contesting from the Soreng-Chakung seat for the second time. He previously won the seat in the 2019 elections, securing 6,580 votes and defeating SDF’s Sancha Raj Subba, who garnered 6,372 votes.

In the Assembly elections earlier this year, the Namchi-Shinghithang seat was won by Krishna Kumari Rai, the wife of CM Tamang.

As per the Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines, the final date for filing nominations is October 25, 2024 (Friday), between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on October 28, and candidates have until October 30 to withdraw their nominations.

The bye-elections for both the Soreng-Chakung and Namchi-Shinghithang seats will take place on November 13, 2024, with the counting of votes scheduled for November 23.
