He also urged the poll panel to directly ask the state administration to take stern action to ensure rule of law.
Ahead of Lok Sabha and assembly polls, the Sikkim Democratic Front has written to the Election Commission of India urging for President’s rule to be imposed in the state due to alleged failure of constitutional machinery.
The SDF added that fair elections in the state would only be possible under President’s rule.
The SDF has alleged that the incumbent Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government has resorted to violence and has been sending goons to target its members. The party mentioned several incidents of violence allegedly perpetrated by SKM to substantiate their point.
In a memorandum addressed to the chief election commissioner on Monday, SDF leader and former chief minister Pawan Chamling alleged that SKM members are never held accountable for their crimes and even if they are arrested they are released immediately while their own party members are remanded even if they are the victims.
He also urged the poll panel to directly ask the state administration to take stern action to ensure rule of law.
The party further demanded deployment of central forces to ensure free and fair electioneering.
Chamling said early posting of senior observers to validate the claims made by the SDF in the memorandum.
SDF further said that these issues have been brought to the Governor’s office and are in the records of the Governor and the Union Home Ministry.
Assembly elections in Sikkim are likely to be held along with Lok Sabha polls in April-May.
