A Guwahati court has rejected the bail plea of suspended IAS officer Sewali Devi Sharma, the main accused in the Rs 105 crore State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) scam case.

At present she is lodged at the Guwahati Central Jail.

Sewali along with her son-in-law and contractor, Ajit Pal Singh were arrested in May 2023 by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell from the Cross Lane Hotel in Rajasthan’s Ajmer. Since then, she has been in judicial custody.

It has been alleged that Sewali along with her son-in-law embezzled Rs 105 crore without showing any work orders.

The alleged scam took place during her tenure as the Executive Chairman cum Director, SCERT in 2017 and 2020.

The Personal (A) Department of Assam government on March 18 said that Sewali had also opened as many as 5 bank accounts without approval of the Assam government.

Later, she was suspended from her service.

In July this year, the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell filed a 1,433 page chargesheet before a special court in connection with the case describing the activities carried out by individuals involved in the scam.
