SC pulls up UPSC for delay in appointing Nagaland DGP, directs compliance within a week

In a stern directive, the apex court has asked the UPSC to take the final call with respect to the matter on or before December 19, 2022.

The Supreme Court has rapped the Union Public Service Commission and the Nagaland government for the delay in appointing the DGP, the top cop of the state.

In a stern directive, the apex court has asked the UPSC to take the final call with respect to the matter on or before December 19, 2022. The Apex Court rejected an application filed by the UPSC seeking an additional 60 days to take the final decision. The UPSC had sought additional time for convening the empanelment committee meeting for preparing a panel of officers for appointment to the post of DGP, Nagaland on the ground that the consultation with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs is under process.

In it’s earlier hearing, the Apex Court directed the State of Nagaland to send a fresh list of empanelled officers for appointment to the post of DGP Nagaland to the UPSC. It further directed the UPSC to take a decision on the appointment by 30.11.2022.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice of India, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and P.S. Narasimha also refused to accept the ground put forth by UPSC that there would not be any disruption in the administration in Nagaland as the extended tenure of the incumbent DGP is to come to an end only on 28th February, 2023.
