Row Over Covering ‘Manipur’ Name: COCOMI Calls for 48-hour State-Wide Shutdown

First Published: 21st May, 2025 20:08 IST

COCOMI is demanding a public apology from the Governor and the resignation of top officials, including the DGP, Security Advisor, and CS over the issue.

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has called for a 48-hour shutdown across Manipur in protest against the forced covering of the name of the state on a Manipur transport bus that was carrying journalists who were on way from Imphal to Ukhrul to cover Shirui Lily festival yesterday.

COCOMI is demanding a public apology from the Governor and the resignation of top officials, including the Director General of Police (DGP), Security Advisor, and Chief Secretary over the issue.

Addressing the media in Imphal, COCOMI Convenor Athouba Khuraijam stated that the recent incident on the Imphal-Ukhrul road, where the name “Manipur” was reportedly concealed on Manipur Transport Service bus, is a direct affront to the identity of the state.

COCOMI strongly condemned the actions of the central forces and criticized the Chief Secretary, Security Advisor, and DGP for what it described as their irresponsible stance on the matter. The 48-hour shutdown, beginning at midnight tonight, demands that the Governor issue a formal apology to the people of Manipur and that the aforementioned officials step down from their posts.

Meanwhile, Governor Ajay Bhalla has appointed a 2-member high level inquiry to probe the facts and incidents leading to the incident where security forces allegedly covered the name of the state on the state government run transport bus.
