Ronie Chowpoo Creates History as First Arunachalee to Command Naval Warship

Commissioned into the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy in 2008, Commander Chowpoo is a first-generation naval officer.

Breaking a major barrier and creating history, Commander Ronie Chowpoo of Nalong village in Namsai district has become the first-ever officer from Arunachal Pradesh to command a frontline Indian Naval warship under the prestigious Eastern Fleet.

An alumnus of Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun and the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, Commander Chowpoo has charted an inspiring journey from the serene hills of Arunachal Pradesh to the high seas, defending the nation’s maritime interests.

Commissioned into the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy in 2008, Commander Chowpoo is a first-generation naval officer. He specialises in Communication and Electronic Warfare and has served on several of the Navy’s most advanced frontline warships, including guided missile destroyers and frigates. He has also held key appointments at shore-based establishments.

Reacting to the achievement, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu took to X and wrote, “His achievement is not just personal, but a moment of immense pride for the entire state, a shining example of discipline, dedication, and unwavering service to the nation.”
