Rising mercury: Meghalaya schools to have hydration breaks, no outdoor activities

Authorities have asked schools in Meghalaya, the state known for its cooler climate, to stop any outdoor activities or sports because of the ongoing heat wave
Schools in Meghalaya will now have hydration breaks. Amidst the rising temperatures, Director of School Education and Literacy, Meghalaya, Swapnil Tembe has asked the schools to have hydration breaks for the students.
In an order issued, Tembe instructed all schools to adhere to strict precautions and guidelines to safeguard the well-being of students and staff.
The directive also mandates schools across Meghalaya to refrain from organizing any outdoor activities or sports during the ongoing heat wave.
“Adequate hydration facilities must be available throughout the school premises, including access to drinking water and shaded areas. It should be ensured that all students stay hydrated by drinking water regularly. Provision of ORS/lemon water should be made available in case some students face dehydration”, the order said.
“All students should be encouraged to bring a water bottle with them. Hydration breaks can be notified by schools as per their convenience”, it added.
“In view of the scorching heat wave which continues to affect the entire State in regions in particular, it is imperative to ensure the safety and well-being of the students and staff”, the Director of School Education & Literacy said.
Further the order said, “prolonged exposure to heat especially during 12 pm to 3 pm should be avoided. Students should be encouraged to use caps or umbrellas while coming to and going from schools. It should also be ensured that students do not walk barefoot inside or near the school premises.”
In cases of severe dehydration, the student should be immediately taken to the nearest health facility.
Collaboration with local authorities, emergency services, and healthcare providers is essential for effective heat wave preparedness and response. All schools are directed to be in touch with the nearest health facility and to keep their contact details handy, it added.
