Manipur: Ema Gi Meira Convenor Th. Sujata questioned the delay in the formation of a government by the BJP-led NDA
Amid the political uncertainty and demand for a popular government in Manipur getting bigger and louder, Ema Gi Meira, a civil society group of the state, has now set a deadline of May 30 for BJP MLAs to either form a popular government or resign.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Ema Gi Meira Convenor Th. Sujata questioned the delay in the formation of a government by the BJP-led NDA, despite holding a majority in the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Sujata expressed concern over the party’s dependence on the Centre for the selection of a leader, asking why the state unit could not independently elect a leader capable of governing. Sujata said that a meeting between Ema Gi Meira representatives and BJP officials took place at the BJP headquarter in Imphal today. Although the group had sought a meeting with the State BJP President, they were instead received by two General Secretaries and the Vice President. During the interaction, Sujata questioned BJP’s intention and demanded answers on the delay in government formation.
Drawing a contrast between the current political scenario and the Congress regime, Sujata said that the Congress party leadership and elected MLAs selected their leader without external intervention. Sujata questioned why the BJP could not follow a similar democratic process.
Sujata dismissed the 10 NDA MLAs meeting Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and submitting a letter to him expressing their intent to form a popular government as a symbolic gesture aimed at pacifying public dissatisfaction rather than a genuine effort to resolve the political deadlock.
There are speculations that BJP may hold a joint meeting with alliance partners on May 30 to finalize leadership and government formation. Sujata urged BJP to take decisive action, calling for the exclusion of any MLA who fails to attend the meeting on May 30.
