Sikkim Landslide: Among those rescued were injured army personnel, their family members, and tourists stranded in the area.
Rescue operations are underway on war footing at Chaten in Lachen district of Sikkim, where a devastating landslide struck an Army camp on Monday, killing 3 people including 2 Army-men and a porter. At-least 6 others, including a Lieutenant Colonel, his wife a retired Squadron Leader and his daughter are missing.
Meanwhile, following the devastating landslide at the site, the first group of stranded individuals were successfully air evacuated from Chaten today. Two MI-17 V5 helicopters completed the evacuation mission, landing safely at Pakyong Greenfield Airport with 34 evacuees on board.
Among those rescued were injured army personnel currently undergoing medical treatment, their family members, and tourists stranded in the area, including 2 U.S nationals.
Moreover, in response to the disaster, NDRF personnel equipped with essential supplies were deployed to Chaten in a Mi-17 V-5 helicopter from the Pakyong Greenfield Airport. The NDRF units are equipped with satellite phones and essential emergency equipment.
The deployment aims to bolster on-ground efforts in the remote region, where access has been severely hampered due to the disaster. The teams will aid in evacuation, rescue and the establishment of temporary communication lines to assist affected residents.
Authorities have issued directives to explore alternate foot-access routes and assess the feasibility of helipad operations, depending on prevailing weather conditions. Efforts are made to reach isolated communities and ensure timely aid.
