Mokokchung has been the worst affected with several houses damaged and the highway blocked but traffic was restored by late evening

Heavy rain triggered landslides and rockslides in Mokokchung district of Nagaland causing massive damage to property and disrupting traffic movement in the area.

Recent days have seen a series of devastating natural events that have disrupted transportation, inflicted severe property damage, and raised concerns about the safety of the affected areas.

The Yisemyong area was among the worst hit. On August 10, at 6 am, a house located on NH 61 (New NH02) was completely destroyed by landslides. Nearby houses also suffered damage, evoking concerns about the area’s overall safety and the condition of the roads.

Further, a building and an Anganwadi Centre were struck by a rockslide, causing damage and displacing an affected family. Approximately 2 kilometres away, another rockslide occurred but no damage to property or the road has been reported.

The most massive landslide, stretching over 500 meters, occurred between Yisemyong and Mongsenyimti, at 168.500 km along NH 61 (New NH 02). This colossal event brought the vehicular movement to a complete standstill and caught residents and authorities off-guard. The ongoing construction work of the two-lane project on the highway suffered a major setback due to this incident.

Kanoto Zhimomi, the Project Head of the construction company, Sri Avantika Contractors, expressed astonishment at the landslide’s scope and intensity. Fortunately, no residential properties were located in the affected area.

However, the construction company and government agencies were prompt enough to get on with the road clearing work restoring traffic movement.
In Mokokchung town, houses in the Marepkong Ward suffered varying degrees of destruction. One house was completely razed to the ground and another partially damaged. The Sangtemla Ward also experienced the impact, as one house bore the brunt of the disaster.

Local authorities, in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority, are assessing the extent of the damage caused by these natural events, striving to provide support to affected residents and restore normalcy in the district.

Sources confirmed that traffic on the affected highways has been restored by late evening.
