Recruitment for Mizoram’s Territorial Army to Begin Next Month

Selected recruits will undergo six months of training starting in the first week of Nov at the Assam Regiment Centre in Shillong.
The Territorial Army (TA) ‘Home & Hearth’ Mizoram, a special initiative spearheaded by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, is set to commence recruitment on July 26 in Aizawl. The announcement was made during a press conference by Lt Col. Clement Lalhmingthanga, MLA and Chairman of the Coordination & Land Search Committee.
In the first round, 70 personnel will be recruited to fill 102 vacant positions, with the remaining posts to be staffed by personnel from the 166 Infantry Battalion TA, Assam Regiment. Selected recruits will undergo six months of training starting in the first week of November at the Assam Regiment Centre in Shillong.
Initially, two companies will be raised, supplemented by the redeployment of two additional companies from the 166 Infantry Battalion (TA), Home & Hearth, Assam Regiment, Tezpur. These companies will include a mix of newly recruited personnel and currently serving members.
What is the Territorial Army of Mizoram?
Envisioned as a specialised battalion comprising local youth — the “sons of the soil” TA Home & Hearth Mizoram is designed to harness the unique strengths of those familiar with the region’s terrain, culture and conditions.
Lt Col. Lalhmingthanga explained that the TA Home & Heart Mizoram will serve as a reserve force, supporting regular army units in various roles. These include disaster relief, civil administration support and crucially, intelligence and information gathering — a role in which local recruits will be particularly effective due to their knowledge of the region.
When was the Idea of Territorial Army First Floated?
The initiative traces its roots back to July 5, 2024, when Chief Minister Lalduhoma sent a formal request (DO letter) to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Army HQ Delhi, proposing the creation of a Mizo Scout Battalion. This proposal was further reinforced during his in-person meeting with the COAS on July 6, 2024, in Delhi.
Subsequently, on October 23, 2024, the Chief Minister addressed a DO letter to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, advocating instead for the establishment of a Territorial Army (Home & Hearth) unit in Mizoram — a shift from a mobile Scout battalion to a stationary TA battalion rooted within the state.
The proposal culminated in a high-level meeting held on May 9, 2025, between Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Maj Gen Vijay Jotwani, SM, Chief of Staff, 3 Corps, at the Chief Minister’s office in Aizawl. During this meeting, plans were finalised to raise two companies of TA (Home & Hearth) Mizoram.
As of now, TA Home & Heart Mizoram does not yet have a designated permanent base, with efforts ongoing to identify and secure land for the unit’s setup.
This marks a significant step in strengthening regional security and ensuring rapid local response capabilities during emergencies and natural calamities, with the added benefit of fostering local pride and participation in national service.
