With just a few days left for the Lok Sabha elections in Meghalaya, the electioneering have paced up across the hill state. The United Democratic Party (UDP)leader and the Tourism minister of Meghalaya, Paul Lyndoh while sharing his perspective on the electioneering, has stressed on several issues ranging from coal mining to channelising youths in the society and also appealed for a violence free elections.

Exuding confidence that the Regional Democratic Alliance candidate Robert June Kharjahrin will emerge as the dark horse in the Shillong Lok Sabha elections, he stressed on urban apathy calling it a trend in the Shillong parliamentary seat.

Speaking to Northeastlive Paul said, “Electioneering this time has been rather luke warm but that has been on the trend in the Shillong parliamentary seat. specially in the urban areas what is generally called urban apathy towards the elections.”

Asked about how UDP is planning to counter the major factor of urban apathy,Lyndoh said,”  We have already strategized the ways and means of encouraging voters to come forward and we also have kept in mind that people in the villages tend to be different by the thinking process than the people from the city of Shillong. Therefore, as a president of UDP in Shillong, I have been holding a number of consultative meetings to ensure that we encourage the rise of voters turning up for voting”.

Further adding on he said ” The major advantage this time is that we have all candidates who are well qualified, highly educated and in a position to understand law, governance and the constitutional matters. But the only drawback is that there has been atrend of violence which is something unheard of in the previous elections”

Moreover, he has urged the voters to use their intellectuals, their power to reason and the capacity to think  rather than being emotional while electing their representatives in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections .

Meanwhile on asking about his response on replacing rat hole mining with scientific mining, Lyndoh said,” today the concern about balancing livelihood issues with ecology has been stressed upon by all policy makers, and we certainly have no other choice except to prefer scientific mining. I am sure it will also cater to the needs and provide sustainable longterm development in Meghalaya”.

While he did not mention any specific date as to from when the scientific mining would take place in the stae.

Furthermore, calling youths as a major formative sector in the society Paul Lyndoh has outlined the implementation of Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP), Cinema Halls to encourage the local fims, among others as major initiatives to find a long way of sustainable livelihood for the youths.Along with tjhis, fifty thousand youths have also been engaged in various activities linked to touirism
