Rains Claim 1 Life, Red Alert Issued Across Northeast As Heavy Downpur Pound Region, Landslides Flooded Roads Paralyse Normal Life

Heavy incessant rains continue to lash across entire northeast. The heavy rains claimed one life in Mizoram and injured another after a retaining wall at the Pioneer Compound in Aizawl’s Thuampui locality, collapsed early this morning.
Flight operations to and from the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati have been affected. 3 flights have been diverted to Kolkata and 2 to Agartala, few flights are delayed. Roads and NH 37 in Guwahati leading to the airport, was choc-a-block with traffic stranded for hours.
Landslides and rockslides have been reported from different parts of northeast, schools have been shut in some states. Office-goers and people in general were seen struggling to reach their destinations due to the heavy downpour and roads which have turned into rivers. Major roads particularly in the main cities of Guwahati and Shillong remain water-logged, crippling normal life. People reached their offices drenched as several cars and two-wheelers got stuck in the water-clogged city roads.
The Meterological Department issued a red alert for all Northeastern States for the next 48 hours. The region is experiencing extreme bad weather primarily because of a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.
Dramatic visuals have come in from different parts of the state capturing the magnitude of the impact of the rains across the region.
In Meghalaya, red alert has been issued in 7 districts – East Garo Hills, East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, and West Jaintia Hills.
Roads looked like rivers in Wah Umkhrah and areas in and around Polo in Shillong. Landslide have been reported at Ratacherra bordering Dona village and the Pynursla road is under water. Mudslides have been reported from Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya causing some damage to peoples’ properties. The road leading to Sohra and Dawki is blocked due to landslide.
Roads are submerged in Jorabat, a busy junction and the only route that connects Guwahati with Shillong directly, and garbage was seen floating on the road as clogged drains added to the worsening flood situation.
As per the IMD forecast, East Garo Hills and East Khasi Hills are expected to receive extremely to exceptionally heavy rain, while other affected districts are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated spells of extreme intensity.
In view of the forecast, the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority has issued advisories urging the public to remain alert and adopt precautionary measures.
The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) is working round the clock braving bad weather and strong windspeed to restore power in several parts of the state where power supply was disrupted as power lines sustained critical damage, with uprooted trees crashing onto transmission infrastructure and insulators being broken at multiple sites.
Moving to Mizoram now. Schools in Aizawl remained shut for the second day today as heavy rains continue to batter the hill state. Rockslide was reported from Chanmari, one of the busiest areas of Aizawl.
Moving to Manipur. The Kangpokpi District Administration has issued an urgent weather advisory following a Red Alert from the IMD, warning of potentially severe weather conditions over the next 48 hours. Kangpokpi has been placed under a Yellow Alert till tomorrow. Kangpokpi DC Mahesh Hiralal Chaudhari has urged residents to remain vigilant and not venture out unnecessarily.
In Senapati district, incessant rain that has been continuing since May 28 night had caused road blockades in some areas because of landslides. Landslides along Tadubi-Ukhrul road and Maram-Peren road have caused immense inconveniences to the commuters in these stretches. The main lifeline – National Highway 2 between Imphal and Dimapur, thankfully is plying as usual.
The water level of the Senapati river has been rising, but it is still flowing within the danger mark.
According to the IMD bulletin, extremely heavy rainfall—exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours—and squally winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are expected to hit isolated parts of Tamenglong and Senapati districts.
In Arunachal Pradesh, torrential rains, since last night has triggered massive landslides in West Kameng district. Vehicles have been stranded due to a roadblock near Jamiri.
According to sources, road clearance work could not begin due to continuous rain.
Normal life has come to a halt in Bomdila due to nonstop rains. Power supply disruption at certain localities of the town has also been reported.
In Guwahati, the region’s largest city, also known as the gateway to the northeast, major city roads and areas such as Beltola, Survey, Hatigaon, Panjabri, Rukminigaon was waterlogged, throwing normal life out of gear. Commuters were stranded on the road for hours together as traffic moved at snail’s pace.
As per the met department’s forecast, squally wind with speed 40-50 kmph gusting upto 60 kmph is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.
Thunderstorm and lightning with gusty wind reaching upto 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with exceptionally heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely over Meghalaya.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely to occur over Assam, Mizoram & Tripura.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur.
