Punjab Election Results 2022: EC bans victory processions after results

The Election Commission of India (ECI) yesterday said no victory processions would be allowed after the Punjab poll results which will be declared today.

A total of 117 counting centres have been set up at 66 locations in Punjab.

The decision to ban victory processions was made in accordance with the Election Commission of India’s guidelines, said Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Dr S Karuna Raju.

He further added that the goal was to follow Covid-19 safety guidelines.

Only two persons will be allowed to join the winning candidate when he or she will receive the certificate of victory.

With the deployment of 45 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to 117 counting centres, three-tier security has been set up.

Counting of votes for 117 assembly constituencies of Punjab is now underway. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has established a clear lead, leaving Congress a distant 2nd in the poll race. 

AAP is leading by 88 seats, while Congress is leading by 12 seats.

The Legislative Assembly elections were held in Punjab on February 20, 2022, to elect the 117 members of the 16th Assembly of the Punjab Legislative Assembly.
