Protest Over Concealing ‘Manipur’ Name: COCOMI’s Students Wing Locks Down Central Govt Offices

MAnipur: Protestors locked the gates of the offices of Chief Electoral Officer and the Geological Survey of India.

Continuing with its protests, the students wing of COCOMI today shut down central government offices in Manipur, including the offices of the Chief Electoral Officer and the Geological Survey of India.

This action is part of their movement against the disrespect shown to Manipur’s identity and dignity by the Government. According to the protesters, “If India neglects Manipur, it forfeits the right to be respected.”

The protest began with the closure of the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer at Lamphel, followed by the Geological Survey of India office located within the campus of the Trade and Commerce Department.

In a symbolic act of tit-for-tat, COCOMI student members covered the word “India” on the signage of the Geological Survey office, declaring that if India does not respect Manipur, then Manipur will also withhold its respect for India.

COCOMI student wings also tried to close the Office of the Directorate of Census Operation at Porompat, Imphal East but they could not do it due to the presence of large number of security forces led by SP Imphal East at the office.

Manipur capital Imphal has been on the boil since May 20 when security forces forcefully concealed the name of the state on a transport bus that was carrying journalists from Imphal to Ukhrul to cover the Shirui Lily festival.
