President’s Rule Imposed In Manipur Days After Biren Singh’s Resignation

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued an official notification, confirming the decision.

President’s Rule has been imposed in Manipur after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to name a new chief minister following N Biren Singh’s resignation. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued an official notification, confirming the decision.

“I, Droupadi Murmu, President of India, have received a report from the Governor of the State of Manipur and after considering the report and other information received by me, I am satisfied that a situation has arisen in which the Government of that State cannot be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of India,” the notification stated.

Despite multiple rounds of discussions, BJP leaders, including the party’s northeast in-charge Sambit Patra, failed to reach a consensus on Singh’s successor. Patra met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla twice in two days, first alongside state BJP president A Sharda Devi on Tuesday and again on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Congress MLA Thokchom Lokeshwar questioned the intent of Patra’s visit, suggesting it was aimed at preventing an assembly session rather than resolving the leadership crisis. “His visit is to ensure that the issues of the state remain sidelined. So far, he has not made any comment either,” Lokeshwar remarked.
