People in Shillong Take to Streets to Condemn Atrocities Against Minorities in Bangladesh

They voiced their anger against the violence that has been specifically targeting Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Christians in Bangladesh.
Hundreds of protesters flooded the streets of Shillong today to condemn the escalating violence against minority communities in Bangladesh. The unrest has been particularly alarming, with reports of the bust of U Tirot Sing, a revered Khasi freedom fighter, being destroyed by rioters in Dhaka. In addition to this, the rioters targeted the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC), setting parts of the building on fire and defacing the memorial of U Tirot Sing at its entrance.
Organized by the All Meghalaya Citizen Conscious Forum, the rally began at Mawbah Point and culminated at Rhino Point. Protesters held placards bearing messages such as “Hero of the Nation: Bangladesh Unrest, Bust of Tirot Sing Destroyed” and “Protect Religious Minorities of Bangladesh.”
They voiced their anger against the violence that has been specifically targeting Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Christians in Bangladesh.
The rally’s participants also expressed solidarity with the affected communities, chanting patriotic slogans like “Bharat Mata ki Jai.” They demanded urgent action to safeguard the rights of religious minorities in Bangladesh, particularly women and children, and to protect cultural heritage sites like temples and churches. A memorandum was set to be submitted to Bangladesh’s interim Prime Minister via the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills.
The unrest in Bangladesh initially began in June 2024 with student protests over an inequitable quota system but has since been exacerbated by economic instability and rising unemployment. This has led to widespread violence, causing significant harm to religious minorities and their cultural heritage. Protesters in Shillong called for immediate measures to restore peace and security.
