In response to the severe flooding affecting various parts of Manipur and in light of urgent requisitions from the Deputy Commissioner, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles launched Operation JalRahat 2, a large-scale flood relief and rescue operation.
According to a release by Inspector General Assam Rifles (South), Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) of the Assam Rifles were immediately deployed to the worst-hit areas, including Porompat, Wangkhei, Sanjenthong, Palace Compound, New Checkon, Khurai Heikrumakhong Heinang, Soibam Leikai, Wangkhei Angom Leikai, and Nongmeibung Rajbari in Imphal East district, as well as adjoining areas in Imphal East and West districts.
Two major rescue columns were activated as part of the operation.
The first column, based in Singjamei, carried out rescue operations in Wangkhei Khunou between 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM, successfully evacuating 193 people, including 64 men, 85 women, and 44 children.
Simultaneously, the second column conducted operations in Heikrumakhong between 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM, rescuing 182 people, comprising 35 men, 90 women, and 57 children.
At various other locations across Imphal East and West, an additional 408 individuals were safely evacuated, including 137 men, 179 women, and 92 children. The total number of people rescued during the operation reached approximately 800, which included 10 to 20 differently-abled and elderly individuals.
All those rescued were relocated to safer, higher ground. On-site assistance included drinking water, food packets, and immediate medical aid provided by medical teams from Assam Rifles.
In one particularly tense moment, a distress call from Khurai about missing children was received. Troops quickly launched a search party and successfully located and rescued the children by 1:30 PM.
In another mission, Assam Rifles evacuated the office of All India Radio (AIR) Imphal in the early hours of the morning, following an emergency request from the AIR Director. As floodwaters inundated the premises, troops acted swiftly to evacuate staff and relocate critical IT and communication equipment, ensuring the safety of personnel and the preservation of vital broadcasting infrastructure.
The rescue efforts were carried out under extremely challenging conditions, with multiple columns fully equipped with rescue boats operating non-stop to assist affected civilians. The situation is now under control, and Assam Rifles remains fully committed to supporting the people of Manipur during this crisis.
