ONGC Gas Leak Enters Day 5: Assam CM to Dial Petroleum Minister

Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma will speak to Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri over the ONGC well blowout incident at Sivasagar that has entered the fifth day today. Over 70 families have been forced to live in a school nearby.
Speaking to media in Dibrugarh on Tuesday, Chief Minister Sarma said “I’ll speak to Minister of Petroleum today afternoon. My request will be to send experts immediately so that this leakage is controlled immediately. If somehow fire connect with the leakage, it will be a huge disaster. So far there is only leakage, there is no fire. But if for some reason fire happens then it will go out of control. So matter is very serious, matter is very urgent.”
Expressin concern, Chief Minister Sarma said that inspite of the best efforts, ONGC has failed to cap the gas leak. People are suffering, they are being forced to live in a school nearby and students’ education is getting hampered as they are not able to go to schools and colleges. It may be noted that lleakage of gas continued for the sixth day at a well of energy major ONGC in Assam’s Sivasagar district, where 70 families have been shifted to a relief camp.
The blowout took place on June 12 at well No. RDS 147A of rig no. SKP 135 of Rudrasagar oil field of ONGC at Barichuk in Bhatiapar. A private firm, SK Petro Services, was operating the well on behalf of the state-run Maharatna company.
A team led by ONGC director (technology and field services) Vikram Saxena on Saturday (June 14, 2025) took over the operational control of well no. RDS 147 A, where the blowout took place.
