Valte had to land at the airport in Mizoram as even now Kukis cannot fly to Imphal and enter the valley areas of the state.
After being under treatment and bedridden for close to two years in New Delhi, Vungzagin Valte, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Thanlon Constituency in Manipur, who was brutally attacked in May 2023, at the very start of the ongoing crisis between the Meitei and Kuki communities, today arrived at the Lengpui Airport in Mizoram en-route to his home state Manipur.
Speaking to the media at Airport, Valte sounded deeply hurt as he said that he received very little support from the Manipur Assembly. A visibly emotional Valte accused the former administration under N Biren Singh of being “against the Zohnahthlak right from the beginning,” saying that his community, being direct descendants of the Zo people, had been repeatedly sidelined.
“I received very little support from the Manipur Assembly during the hardest time of my life,” Valte now on a wheelchair, said. He hoped that the Zo people will “come together and stand united in the face of challenges.”
Valte had to land at the airport in Mizoram as even now Kukis cannot fly to Imphal and enter the valley areas of the state.
At the Lengpui Airport, MLA Valte was received by H. Ginzalala, Adviser to the Mizoram’s Chief Minister (Technical), and Roluahpuia, Vice President of the Mizo Students Union.
The attack on Valte took place on May 4, 2023, when he was on his way back after meeting the then Chief Minister N. Biren Singh to advocate for peace on behalf of the Zohnahthlak community. On his way back from the meeting, a huge mob stopped him near RIMS Road in Imphal West. They assaulted him so brutally that one side of his face was crushed, and his left eye was damaged.
Valte was airlifted to Delhi the next day for emergency treatment. He spent several weeks on a ventilator with a feeding tube at Apollo Hospital, battling for his life. Since then, he has been under long-term medical care, recovering from the physical and emotional trauma of the assault.
Now, as part of his return journey to Manipur, a chopper has been arranged to safely transport him back to his home state.
