On 90th Birthday, Dalai Lama Urges Compassion and Peace Over Celebration

First Published: 6th July, 2025 8:26 IST

Well-wishers across the globe, especially in Tibetan communities, have been holding gatherings and events to mark his milestone birthday.

The Dalai Lama turned 90 today, but instead of asking for celebrations, he shared a heartfelt message urging people to spread compassion, warm-heartedness, and inner peace.

In a statement issued by him on the occasion, the Tibetan spiritual leader said, “I am just a simple Buddhist monk. I don’t normally engage in birthday celebrations. However, since you are organizing events focused on my birthday, I wish to share some thoughts.”

Well-wishers across the globe, especially in Tibetan communities, have been holding gatherings and events to mark his milestone birthday. But the Dalai Lama used the opportunity to speak about what truly matters.

“I appreciate that many of you are using the occasion to engage in initiatives that highlight the importance of compassion, warm-heartedness, and altruism,” he said.

He reminded everyone that material development is important, but peace of mind matters more.

“It is vital to focus on achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate, not just toward near and dear ones, but toward everyone,” he said. “Through this, you will contribute to making the world a better place.”

He also renewed his personal commitments, spreading human values, promoting religious harmony, sharing ancient Indian wisdom about the mind and emotions, and preserving Tibetan culture and heritage.

“Tibetan culture, rooted in peace of mind and compassion, has much to contribute to the world,” he said.

The Dalai Lama added that he draws strength each day from the teachings of the Buddha and Indian masters like Shantideva. He ended his message with one of Shantideva’s verses that guides his life,

“As long as space endures,
As long as sentient beings remain,
Until then, may I too remain
To dispel the miseries of the world.”
