Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be implemented, and individuals whose names do not appear in the register will be deported to Bangladesh.
Addressing reporters, CM Sarma stressed the importance of the NRC amid concerns about demographic changes in Jharkhand. “The NRC will be carried out, and those whose names are missing will have to be pushed back to Bangladesh. This will be our policy,” he stated.
He further assured that all individuals would be given the opportunity to present their case during the NRC process. “Legal procedures will be followed, and if a person cannot prove their Indian citizenship, we will use the legal route to deport them to Bangladesh,” CM added.
Sarma revealed that Assam has already identified 14 lakh individuals who, based on preliminary findings, are not Indian citizens. “One phase of the process in Assam has been completed, and we have requested the Supreme Court for approval to conduct another revision. If granted, the number of identified illegal immigrants will likely increase,” he said.
In addition, stricter regulations for obtaining Aadhaar cards in Assam will take effect on October 1, requiring stringent verification. Individuals not registered under the NRC will be ineligible for Aadhaar.
The Assam government has intensified efforts to detect illegal immigrants along the state’s international borders, directing the Assam Police Border Organisation to prioritize this process and submit monthly reports on progress.
