The sudden demise of veteran Congress leader and former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has come as a major loss for the political landscape in the region.

The Chief Ministers and leaders of eight northeastern states mourned the demise of the veteran leader, whose political career spanned over five decades.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the State has lost an experienced, capable and efficient political leader. He was a people’s leader who had great contribution in the state’s political and public sphere.

“Even though we were in Opposition parties, we shared a wonderful rapport and he was a guiding figure,” Sonowal said.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed deep shock and offered heartfelt condolences on the demise of the veteran politician.

In his condolence message, Biren Singh said that the country, especially the Northeast region, has lost a great public leader.

Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma remembered Gogoi as a tall leader, who was respected across party lines and adored for his immeasurable contributions towards the cause of Assam and the Northeast.

Mizoram CM Zoramthanga described the death of the veteran Congress leader as a huge loss for the Northeast region.

Expressing deep anguish over the demise of Tarun Gogoi, Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb said that Assam has lost a senior leader and a veteran administrator.

Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio, Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu and Sikkim CM PS Golay also condoled the demise of the political stalwart.
