Even as Manipur remains among the top states with a high number of human rights violation cases, the Manipur Human Rights Commission has entered its’ darkest phase today with no members left in the commission.

Its’ only member, Acting Chairperson, Khaidem Mani, retired today.

Mani, who assumed office as a member of the commission in August 2018, was entrusted to act as the chairperson and with posts of two other members lying vacant since 2019, he has been acting as a one-man army to safeguard human rights for the last 4 years.

He was compelled to retire today, due to his age. He is 70 years of age.

Speaking to the media today before leaving office, Mani highlighted achievements made by the commission during his tenure as an acting chairperson.

Even though he has no regrets, he said that he feels dismayed at how the state government turned a blind eye to the commission being crippled by a lack of adequate infrastructure, funding, and manpower.

Mani also launched a scathing attack on the government and said that it should not downplay issues that violate human rights.

It needs to be mentioned that the commission headed by Khaidem Mani, was instrumental in lifting disturbed area status from the jurisdictions of 9 more police stations in the state.
