Pradyot Backs TSF’s Demand: Hundreds of TSF and YTF members gathered at major intersections, raising slogans and disrupting traffic.
TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma strongly backed the Twipra Students’ Federation’s (TSF) demand for the Roman script for Kokborok, stating that no language should be imposed on another. His remarks came as TSF activists blocked the VIP road leading to the Airport, Assembly, and High Court in Agartala on Friday, coinciding with the first day of Tripura’s Budget Session.
Hundreds of TSF and YTF members gathered at major intersections, raising slogans and disrupting traffic. The protest led to massive congestion as security forces struggled to clear the blockade. Commuters faced long delays, with movement coming to a standstill in several areas.
Speaking to the media, Pradyot said that the interests of the indigenous community outweigh political considerations. “Students should be allowed to read and write in the script they prefer,” he asserted. He extended his solidarity to the protestors and urged the government to listen to their long-pending demand.
TSF in-charge and YTF general secretary James Debbarma stated that the demand for the Roman script had been ignored for over five decades, despite repeated assurances from successive governments. He warned that protests would continue until the demand was met.
Tripura Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman also extended his full support, calling the demand legitimate and deeply rooted in indigenous sentiments.
The indefinite strike has brought parts of Agartala to a halt, escalating tensions between the student organisations and the government.
