The demand for the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya resurfaced with renewed force on Thursday as members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) launched a protest outside the state Secretariat in Shillong.

Led by HYC president Roykupar Synrem, the protestors raised slogans of “No ILP, No Rest” while attempting to march towards the Secretariat to press their long-pending demand. However, security personnel stopped them at the main gate, turning the area into a high-security zone.

Undeterred by the police barricades, the HYC members continued their demonstration and called on the state government to take immediate action on the issue. They said the implementation of ILP is crucial to protect the rights of the indigenous people and prevent the unchecked entry of outsiders, especially those who may pose a threat to law and order.

“We will not rest until the government enforces the Inner Line Permit in Meghalaya. The ILP is the only mechanism that can safeguard our people from those entering the state with criminal intentions,” said HYC president Roykupar Synrem while addressing the gathering.

The HYC has consistently demanded the introduction of ILP in Meghalaya under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873. The demand has grown louder in recent years, especially after the central government extended ILP to Manipur in 2019.

The protest ended peacefully, but the HYC said that it would continue its agitation until the government responds with concrete steps to implement the ILP.
