Chayan Dutta and Nidhi Sharma were part of the Command and Data Handling Subsystem during the launch of Chandrayaan 3 in July
It was a day of goose bumps, anxiety, nail biting excitement which finally ended on a note of extreme joy and pride for every Indian across the globe as India landed on Moon. India’s third lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3, successfully landed on the south polar region of the Moon scripting history today at 6:04 PM. India became just the fourth country to land on the Moon after the United States, Russia, and China, to achieve the feat.
As whole of India celebrated, it was an extra special moment for Assam because two scientists – Nidhi Sarma and Chayan Dutta, both from the state, were part of the triumphant Team ISRO who handled the successful launch and landing of Chandrayaan 3.
Nidhi who hails from Tinsukia and Chayan Dutta from Lakhimpur were part of the Command and Data Handling Subsystem during the launch of Chandrayaan 3 on July 14 earlier this year.
Nidhi completed her higher education at Tezpur Central University after graduating from North Lakhimpur College. She is currently working as a researcher at the U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC). Nidhi who is expecting her first child, was involved in the Chandrayaan 2 mission. She has worked with ISRO for over a decade now.
Scientist Chayan Dutta was the person who oversaw the launch control operations of the mission in July. An alumnus of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Tezpur University, Chayan Dutta is working as a Scientist/Engineer-G at the UR Rao Satellite Centre, Department of Space.
He was heading the “On Board Command Telemetry, Data Handling, and Storage System, Lander, Chandrayan-3” as Deputy Project Director.
The Command and Data Handling subsystem is essentially the ‘brains’ of the orbiter and controls all spacecraft functions.
Chandrayaan-3, India’s third lunar mission carried out by ISRO, was launched on July 14 at 2.35 pm from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
