First Published: 29th December, 2024 15:57 IST

NHIDCL plans to conduct a drone survey of the crucial Sevoke-to-Rangpo stretch, covering 52.10 km, on December 31.

In a significant move, Sikkim’s lifeline, National Highway 10, has been officially transferred from West Bengal’s Public Works Department (PWD) to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). The transfer was finalised on December 26 after months of procedural delays.

NHIDCL plans to conduct a drone survey of the crucial Sevoke-to-Rangpo stretch, covering 52.10 km, on December 31. Reconstruction work is set to begin soon after.

This segment of NH-10, plagued by frequent landslides and other natural disasters, has been in poor condition, severely affecting Sikkim’s residents, businesses, and the tourism industry. As a border state, Sikkim relies heavily on this highway for connectivity and strategic purposes.

The handover comes after long-standing demands by Sikkim’s citizens and representatives for better management of this important route. NHIDCL’s takeover raises hopes for long-term improvements and safer travel.
