Indigenous Identity at Risk, NEIPF Urges NE MPs to Take Action to Stop Influx of Myanmar and Bangladesh Refugees into Northeast

The North East Indigenous People’s Forum (NEIPF) today raised concerns over the increasing influx of foreign nationals into Northeastern states urging all Members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha representing the region to take collective action and implement constitutional safeguards to protect the indigenous communities.
NEIPF Chairman, Anup Chetia said that the forum has called on all MPs from the Northeast to take decisive action against the growing influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Chetia said that ongoing migration from these neighbouring countries poses a serious threat to the indigenous identity of the region.
“We met with all the MPs from the Northeast and urged them to take strong action to stop the illegal immigrants, especially from Myanmar and Bangladesh. There is a significant and ongoing influx from these two countries, and it must be halted. If not addressed, our indigenous identity not just in Assam and Manipur, but across the entire region will be at risk of disappearing in the near future,” Chetia said.
The forum has raised concerns over the lack of adequate constitutional mechanisms to address the increasing influx of foreign nationals into the region, warning that the issue is exacerbating an already fragile situation.
Speaking to media, NEIPF General Secretary, N. Ibungochoubi said, “From Arunachal to Mizoram, the northeastern region has become a safe haven for refugees. Very unfortunately, there is no mechanism in the country to check the gradual influx, whether planned or unplanned. The recent happenings in Manipur are alarming, and this could happen across the entire Northeastern region.”
Ibungochoubi urged all MPs from the region in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to work together to develop a vision for how to address the growing migration issue.
“We are requesting all MPs from the Northeast to collectively work on a plan to check and prevent the gradual influx from neighbouring countries like Myanmar and Bangladesh,” he added.
The NEIPF is also planning to meet all the Chief Ministers of the Northeastern states, along with their respective council of ministers, to appeal for meaningful discussions and the creation of a mechanism to safeguard indigenous rights.
