NEHUTA Slams NEHU VC’s “Irresponsible” Letter to Ministry, Demands Accountability

The association further stated that Prof. Shukla’s actions were tarnishing the reputation of NEHUTA, other stakeholders.

The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers Association (NEHUTA) has strongly condemned Vice Chancellor Prof. P. S. Shukla’s recent letter to the Ministry of Higher Education, where he accused NEHUTA, the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU), the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), the state government, and police of causing unrest and halting academic activities at the institution.

In a sharp rebuttal to Prof. Shukla’s claims, NEHUTA alleged that the VC’s accusations are baseless and aimed at deflecting responsibility for the ongoing crisis at the premier university. The association further stated that Prof. Shukla’s actions were tarnishing the reputation of NEHUTA, other stakeholders, and even the state of Meghalaya.

NEHUTA’s letter to the Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education termed the VC’s statements as “irresponsible” and driven by “malafide intentions.” They alleged that Prof. Shukla’s appointment bypassed more qualified candidates, branding it a politically motivated decision.

“Prof. Shukla’s attempts to blame NEHU teachers are unacceptable,” the letter read. “We are compelled to question his academic credentials and his ability to lead a prestigious institution like NEHU.”

The association further claimed that the VC’s letter to the ministry was riddled with “lies and half-truths” and designed to malign individual faculty members and NEHUTA. They called upon the academic community and the public to remain vigilant against what they described as diversionary tactics.

In a firm appeal, NEHUTA urged all stakeholders to unite to restore NEHU’s academic integrity and its former glory. “We trust the judgment of all concerned to ensure NEHU returns to a peaceful academic life,” the association added.

Meanwhile, a two-member committee constituted by the Ministry of Education recently visited the campus and met with all stakeholders to assess the situation.

The protesters have made it clear that they do not want Prof. Shukla to return to the NEHU campus, citing his leadership as detrimental to the institution’s progress. NEHUTA has expressed hope that their concerns will be addressed, paving the way for positive changes at the university.
