NEHU Pro VCs: Despite the earlier reservations, Prof Sungoh and Prof Marak have now officially taken charge.

The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has officially welcomed two distinguished academicians to key leadership positions, marking a new chapter in the institution’s administration. Vice Chancellor Prof P S Shukla announced the appointment of Prof Sherwin May Sungoh as the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Pro VC) of NEHU’s Shillong Campus, effective 21 March 2025 and the appointment of Prof Fameline K Marak as Pro VC of NEHU’s Tura Campus.

Prof Marak assumed office on 26 March 2025.

Prof Sungoh’s appointment follows the resolution adopted during NEHU’s 85th Emergent Executive Council (EC) meeting on 14 November 2024.

Their elevation to the role of Pro VC comes amid past opposition from the North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) and the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU). Notably, both Prof Sungoh and Prof Marak had previously declined their appointments.

Despite the earlier reservations, Prof Sungoh and Prof Marak have now officially taken charge.

Vice Chancellor Prof Shukla, in a statement, urged all stakeholders, including faculty, students, and non-teaching staff, to collaborate peacefully for NEHU’s progress. He praised Prof Sungoh’s vast experience in pedagogy, curriculum development, and educational policy, stating that her expertise would significantly benefit the university.

Prof Sungoh, who has been a professor in the Department of Education at NEHU, Shillong, has contributed to the university’s academic development for several decades. She has actively participated in research projects, publications, and administrative responsibilities, making her a well-respected academic leader.

Prof Marak, one of the senior-most faculty members at NEHU’s Tura Campus, has been associated with the Department of Garo since 1 June 1996. She has played a crucial role in advancing the study of Garo culture and language, earning widespread recognition for her contributions.

In her new role, Prof Marak aims to enhance research opportunities, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthen community engagement at NEHU’s Tura Campus. She envisions fostering an inclusive and innovative learning environment, empowering students and faculty alike.

With both academicians assuming key leadership roles, NEHU is poised for academic growth and institutional development, reinforcing its commitment to excellence in higher education.

During their tenures as Pro VCs, their pay and allowances will be governed by UGC and Ministry of Education guidelines, in accordance with NEHU’s policies. Her service terms will be regulated under Statute 3(2) and Ordinance OE-1 of the university.
